Weekend #1-High School Basketball

Friday, December 17-5 of the7 teams I'm focusing on this year are in action. The other 2, St. Pat's and Christian Brothers Academy are both taking part in other hoops events the res tof this weekend.

  • The game I went to tonight was the St. Joe's season opener against Colonia, who just this season moved into our division while Edison and Woodbridge moved out. Colonia is a team who always plays us close and I had a feeling going in this game would be no different and it proved to be close. This game certainly had the look for St. Joe's of being a younger, inexperienced team. In the first half, St. Joe's only scored 5 in the first quarter and 11 in the second and trailed 21-16 at half. They were given a big momentum boost when they trailed by 10 with 2:14 left in the half but scored seven points in a row--four free throws by sophomore guard Jimbo Long and a three by senior guard Brandon Dolan to close it out For a while in the second quarter, they looked totally lost, missing easy layups, turning the ball over, etc. However, their defense tightened up and started to force Colonia into predominantly being a perimeter team and their shots stopped falling while Joe's started to shoot better. Matt Wagner, who transferred out of St. Joe's to go to Colonia, hit a 3 to give Colonia a 26-23 lead with 5:07 left in the third on a 3-pointer, St. Joe's wound up going on an 11-2 run thanks in large part to Long's free throw shooting as well as Quenton Decosey who started to play much better after his weak first half where he started 0-4 and started around 1 for 8 I think it was. St. Joe's only shot around 20 percent in the first half at 5 for 24 and in the second half they made 10 of 15 shots for 66 percent shooting. That was really the big story of the night and the fact that this is certainly one of those games St. Joe's can look back on as a progressive win for the team and one that they can use to know they can win in tight spots. Colonia for the most part was a 3 point shooting team and Joe's had a lot more height that Colonia in the forward and center positions. Colonia was led by guards David Cole and C.J. Gray who scored 16 points each.
  • Elsewhere, in the county Wardlaw-Hartridge did battle in the GMC Gold Division against one of the favorites usually to win that Division in Dunellen and for a team who struggled last year, Wardlaw-Hartridge has a lot to look forward to suffering a close loss here. This was a close game throughout with Dunellen taking the early 16-11 lead and taking a 31-25 lead into halftime. Wardlaw actually took a 40-39 lead going into the 4th quarter but Dunellen proved to be a little more experienced in this spot thanks to Dylan Hoski scoring 9 of his 19 in the frame. They went on an 11-2 stretch to lead themselves to a 63-60 win. Zach El-Halim scored 13 points for Dunellen, while Jeff Puckett scored 10 and Matt Applegate 9. For Wardlaw Hartridge, they were led by a very solid effort by both Ian English who scored 25 and Justin Davis who had 17. Judging by effots like that, you have ot like Wardlaw to make some noise in the Gold Division now as members of the GMC.
  • Moving over to Union County now, you had one of the best rivalries in the state in my opinion going on in Linden vs. Plainfield. Both teams have a long history and both teams have had their fair share of titles over the year. This year Linden looks like a better team but you can expect Plainfield to be there too at the end of the year. Linden is led by senior guard Elijah Hodge and he was ready for his moment tonight against Plainfield. He scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half and one of his classmates, Rodney Sanders added 16 points for Linden, which went 0-3 vs. Plainfield last year. Early on in the game, it was close and they were trading baskets before Linden took off on a 13-0 run which was sparked by Sanders 2 3-pointers and they were up 19-6 two minutes into the second quarter. Plainfield, however, would keep things close, when they outscored Linden 16-7 over the remainder of the half. In that timeframe, they were led by guard Delano Mullings who came off the bench and seven points by Diijon Allen-Jordan who scored 7 during that period and 16 points overall to cut the lead to 26-23. Plainfield went on an 8-0 run to start the second half, the first five were by Sekou Harris, which gave them a 30-26 lead with 5:15 left in the third. Linden answered wiuth a 9-0 burst for the second and last lead change of the game. Sanders hit two free throws and scored on an assist from Hodge, who also got a three point play on that particular play. Harris for Plainfield would hit 2 more threes and 10 of his team-leading 17 points in the fourth quarter, and a three-point play by Justin Sears would draw Plainfield to just 2 with 1:10 to play. However, Hodge made sure Plainfield's comeback bid was for naught and he hit a shot to make it 56-52. And they would score one more free throw to win 57-52. Gotta love Plainfield-Linden battles and you should expect nothing less than games like this when these two play.
  • In nothing more than a footnote as it is totally expected, St. Patrick's opened their season with a 32 point win over Westfield. They will now travel down to Florida for the City of Palms Classic.
  • Lastly, Monsignor Donovan was the last team in action that I'm covering this season on Friday night. And you talk about exciting atmospheres and I have to say not many beat Shore Conference competition on Friday nights. They are coached by one of New Jersey's most underrated coaches in my opinion in Mike Kearney, who formerly was a coach in Los Angeles and coached players like Andre Miller. They have had some success recently making the Non-Public A final 5 years ago falling to one of the best teams in the state in CBA. They are also one of the teams to show me to never underestimate your opponent and we did just that my sophomore year when our team with the 10th pick in the NBA Draft Andrew Bynum, pretty much got the shit kicked out of us form the beginning of the game and lost by 20 to a under the radar team in Mon Don who came within 2 point sof knocking off the top seed St. Augustine in the game following us. I think this is one of those losses that strengthened both programs. Mon Don hasn't been as good recently but have had good players come through the program just flaling to tougher competition in state and county tournaments. In 06, they made the South A Final losing to a great CBA team 51-47. In 2007, they were the 3 seed who suffered a 40-30 upset at the hands of the 6 seed Camden Catholic. In 2008, they lost a great game at home 61-59 to the 10 seed CBA in a very unfortunate mathcup for Mon Don. They were a very good team that year but had a bad draw getting CBA who's always one of the favorites in the entire bracket in the first round. In 2009, they were a no show to Notre Dame losing by 17 points in Lawrenceville. And in 2010, they were victims of another upset at home to the 7 seed St. Augustine losing 69-68, so this is a team always exciting but have fallen upon rough times in states as of late and lose heartbreakers or have a rough draw. They hope to flip the script this year and get back to their 06 form. In their opener tonight, they're playing Central Regional from Bayville and are undeniably the favorite so the pressure is on them tonight and it will be interesting to see how guard Sean Grennan starts his senior campaign. This game was closer than expected and as expected it was a packed gym in Bayville. Donovan only led 30-24 at halftime and were not able to gain much ground from there winning only by 7, 54-47. This is a game Mon Don can look to improve upon but still a 1-0 record is much better than starting 0-1. Donovan's leading scorer tonight was Anthony Duszczak with 27 points. Sean Grennan added 16. Their lack of scoring options could hurt this team and will need to be able to find more scoring as the season progresses.

Saturday, December 18-Let me start by saying I hate CBA. And I suppose I should, they are undeniably my school, St. Joe's biggest rivals and it seems that we play them in pretty much everything. Over the last 5 years, we've played them 4 times in basketball and 3 times in baseball, which is the two things I helped St. Joe's with by doing scorekeeping and managing. We lost to a great team led by Dan Werner my junior year. They were something like 35-2 that season and played a tournament in Seattle, beat St. Pat's and only lost to St. Anthony's by 2. We lost by 6 at their place less than 45 hours after we won one of the best games I've ever seen deep down the shore at Holy Spirit, near Atlantic City which is about 2 hours from my high school. That game had just about every twist and turn imaginable. Plenty of DI players...their third string forward that year is now playing at Rhode Island...think about that. We were considerable underdogs led by Sean Baptiste, who played his college ball at Fairleigh Dickinson. But the amount of heart both teams showed that night is something I'll never forget. Thanks to us fouling out NC State's Dennis Horner with less than 10 seconds to go we took it to overtime which was one of the most exhilarating things I've ever seen. One of their player Brian Crilley had 4 points to start the overtime, by the end of the fourth, he had in the 30's, and it was by far the most clutch shooting I've ever seen...but he finally missed one at the end of the fourth allowing us to win 94-92. The overtimes were unbelievable. Both teams blowing big leads. I think we blew an 8 point lead with a minute to go. In the 2nd or 3rd ot, they let a 5 point lead slip so it was an unbelievable game and the win against the 5th ranked team in the state was the highest ranked team we've ever beaten so us losing to CBA was not surprising but the fact we only lost by 6 we have an awful lot to be proud of. The following year, we played CBA again at their place losing in OT by 7. This loss was particularly devastating because we had a chance to win at the end of regulation and weren't able to get a shot off. This was also my senior year so it was rough to not be able to be them in our second attempt. However, I knew that year my senior year was going to end very early like mid-May and kinda wanted something to keep me occupied for a little longer while still giving me a chance to hang around all my classmates and friends from high school so I decided to help out the baseball team and I have to say, at the end of the school year it was awesome. The only purpose of us coming back to school was to play and win baseball games. We did that as long as we were able to continue to win. To say we were an inconsistent team that year would be an understatement. We won ugly games. We lost ugly games. We played beautiful baseball at times and at others, we played like total shit. But the bottom line is we made it to the state tournament. We were a 9 seed so we would have to play 3 games on the road just to get to the championship game which would be on a neutral field. Not only did we win those 3, we beat the hell out of them as well beating the 8 seed Red Bank Catholic 6-2, the 1 seed Notre Dame 12-0 where our pitcher threw a controversial 1-hitter when it pprobably should've been a no-hitter, then had a little bit of luck by having to play Holy Cross near Philly who had to move up their game time to 1PM because they had graduation that night so probably weren't as focused as they could've been. We beat them 14-1. The final score was not as indicative of the game. It was close at one point before we exploded in one inning. The turning point easily was when a Holy Cross player did not stpe on the plate after a home run. We threw home afterwards and the run was disallowed. So after this game we had to play CBA on a neutral field with a shot to win the sectional title. We'd be going up against Kyle Slate who would get drafted by the Phillies a few days later. His record? 10-0 with a 0.23 ERA. Obviously we knew this was the type of game that'd be grind it out. If the Holy Spirit game was as great game for basketball given the circumstances us going against a Phillies draftee with as low an ERA as he had with a sectional title on the line and my senior year so there's no tomorrow, this storyline had somehow beat it. We grinded the hell out of this game and thanks to a wild pitch in extra innings we took a 1-0 lead and held on in the bottom to win. It felt great to finally beat them and no less for a sectional title. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Anyway since then, it's been a little closer. We lost to them 2 years ago in baseball but beat the hell out of them last year and lost to them 2 years ago in basketball but at long last, never left any doubt vs. them in basketball this year even without one of our best players playing and a lot of people counted us out and we won. That says a lot about our team's character. Over the last year, the tide has really turned though. We beat them in soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, baseball, and basketball. I guess another thing that I hate about CBA is their arrogance. There's a difference between confidence and arrogance and they are certainly the latter. They expect everything to be given to them and feel they are earned stuff. To me it seems they feel like they are better than everyone. The parents are assholes too. Last year, in our baseball game against them a kid hit the wall and all of us told our players to run home ot which the CBA parents got all up in arms. It's a live ball and it's a crucial moment in the game. Even if he gets hurt they play continues. It continues in every sport. The thing that pisses me off though is that if they were in the same position as us, they would've done the same goddamn thing. So don't be giving us shit about how we're uncompassionate monsters when you guys would've done the same thing. Fuck off. And don't expect me to be compassionate after your pitcher hit one of our better players directly in the skull at 80 mph after getting a hit off him earlier in the game. That could've easily been intentional.

  • With all that being said however, a team perhaps I hate more is Don Bosco Prep. They recruit kids from like 3 or 4 states and are always amongst the best in football and baseball. They should not be part of the NJSIAA. They go by different rules than almost every school in the association goes by. CBA and Bosco were playing at the Hoop Group Tip-Off Today in Plainfield. CBA is always one of those teams that start out slow before progressively gaining momentum as the season continues. Gary Nova helped Don Bosco out to a 12-2 lead hitting 3 3 pointers in that stretch. Their first 5 field goals came from behind the arc and they made 8 of their first 10 as they took a 12 point lead into halftime. They did not hit any more threes however, but still maintained a pretty comfortable lead in the second half. They focused primarily on Matt McMullen who scored a game high 29 points. CBA has started vs. tough competition over the last few years but once they get into Shore Conference play they generally pick things up a level and are a forced to be reckoned with. They play Freehold Twp on Monday and Middletown South on Wednesday and those 2 usually are some of CBA's biggest divisional competition.
  • Another interesting early on test was going on later today at Plainfield High School where New York powerhouse Rice was playing the Cardinals. It was another wasted effort by Sekou Harris as Rice was just too much for Plainfield. After scoring 17 last night, he put in 26 tonight. Early on in the game there was a couple minute stretch where leads changed hands 8 times. The last quarter of the game was predominantly led by 2 runs. Rice led 52-42 after 3. Plainfield went on a 14-0 run to take a 56-52 lead but then Rice went on a 11-2 run to go back up 63-58 with 2:45 remaining. This has obviously been a tough 2 game stretch to open the season but are some of the better teams Plainfield will face all season so they will be fine and a forced to be reckoned with in both Union County and States. Diijon Allen-Jordan had another 16 point night. Justin Sears had 11 points and 12 rebounds. The free throws made a huge difference in this game shooting only 9 of 22. For Rice, Emmanuel Andujar and Richard Council each had 15 and Melvin Johnson had 14.
  • St. Patrick's was playing Michael Jordan's son's high school tonight in Whitney Young in Illinois. Whitney Young is a different program than it was with him and have moved to the background for now while St. Pat's is nationally ranked second behind Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. This game was close in the first half but St. Pat's had broken the game open after the third, outscoring them by 13 in that frame. Derrick Gordon, a Western Kentucky commit, scored 37 points and hit 6 3-pointers. Michael Gilchrist, one of the best players in the nation, who is actually known more for his defense which is a breath of fresh air had a well-balanced game, scoring 13 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Samuel Thompson added 17 points and Paul White added 14 for Whitney Young.

Sunday,December 19-

  • Most weekends in Jersey don't have Sunday games besides the opening weekend where there's a season opener tournament and later on in the season when other events such as the Primetime Shootout, County Tournaments, and other benefit events are going on but today Linden has a game against Teaneck. Teaneck is often one of the Group III powers but Linden for the most part here never left any doubt. This game is a testament to how good this team is. They played a great defensive 23-13 game in the first half, then picked up their offensive pace in the second half scoring 34 points. However their defense allowed 40, but this was after the game was in hand for Linden. They led 45-29 after 3 and Teaneck outscored them by 12 in the 4th quarter and gave Linden a scare for a little while. Elijah Hodge continued his great play as did Rodney Sanders who combined for 35 points. After leading 47-29 after a tip-in, Teaneck went on a 10-0 run and ignited a 24-7 run in that timeframe. They were held there by sophomore guard Shakir Lindsey who hit 2 3-pointers and 10 points in that time. It was cut to a 54-53 lead for Linden with a minute to go. Hodge who ahd 17 points, sunk 3 of 4 free throws in the final minute. Sanders also had 18 points and 9 rebounds for Linden. They were also helped by Teaneck's bad free throw shooting where they went 8 for 19. Christopher Jones and Joel Hernandez had 13 points apiece for Teaneck. Hernandez also had 12 rebounds.

High School Basketball Intro 2010-11

Today is a day that I anticipate every year since I've been following high school basketball because on the third Friday in December, is when the games finally tip off across the state of New Jersey. To me as I'm sure I've stated in one of my prior blogs, basketball is the best sport amongst all high school sports. The excitement in these gyms come county or playoff time or whenever a team is playing one of their biggest rivals is unmatched. There's so many different styles of play and background stories--stories waiting to unfold, how a team's chemistry is coming along, etc. This year I've decided to sort of create a story involving 7 teams, all having their own background story behind them. One of the team's is St. Patrick's in Elizabeth, currently ranked #2 in the USA Today nationally while one of the other's I follow is Wardlaw-Hartridge, who has just joined a conference this year and is now part of the NJSIAA so they are eligible for the state tournament. Here's a breakdown and a couple facts about each team I will follow...
  • St. Patrick's-Several tournament of champions titles, consistently ranked nationally by various polls, several pro players such as Al Harrington have played there, one of the favorites again this year.
  • CBA-Dominant in the Shore Conference, one of the state title contenders perenially, a few NBA players as well, will be in the same state tournament bracket as 2 of the other teams in this story.
  • St. Joe's (Metuchen)-My alma mater. Looks on paper like a rebuilding year but have one new transfer. Has to sit out the first 30 days of the season. Lost one of our players due to being ineligible cause of age. Only starting 2 seniors currently but our best two players are arguably underclassmen. Plays in the GMC and is one of the favorites there.
  • Monsignor Donovan-One of the best teams in Ocean County. Led by one of the best guards in the state in Sean Grennan who is getting some Division I looks. The rest of the team is solid and could make a run in states. CBA, St. Joe's and MD all play in the same bracket in states.
  • Linden-Probably the best Public School team in the state, plays in Union County, usually has very good guards, well coached, tough defense, etc. Depending on the year their state tournament bracket could be very tough because of schools such as East Orange and Elizabeth.
  • Plainfield-Huge rivals with Linden and play in the same conference and county as them. Similar teams. Generally have good guards as well and are well coached. Their defense probably is a little weaker than Linden's but nonetheless solid. Much easier state bracket and at first glance, should have no problem winning their section this year.
  • Wardlaw Hartridge-Newcomer in the GMC and first year in the NJSIAA making them eligible for the state tournament. Will be interesting to see how this team comes along during the season. Very manageable schedule with predominantly Vo-Tech Schools.

Inevitably some of these teams will cross paths throughout the season and it should be a very interesting and enjoyable one. I hope to show in this story why I think NJ is amongst the best high school basketball has to offer and through these 7 teams why I think this is the most exciting and fun of all high school sports.

NJ State Tournament Recap Through Sectional Championship Games/Picks for Tomorrow's Games

Hope everyone is having a good Memorial Day. I'm posting the recap and predictions now because I'll be busy watching tennis tomorrow morning with Roger Federer going up against Robin Soderling who knocked out Rafael Nadal of the French Open last year which helped Federer finally complete the career Grand Slam. It should be a great match and as long as Federer gets by him, I don't think there's anyway that we see a matchup besides Federer-Nadal for the championship, unless Djokovic knocks out Nadal which I could see but it's a long shot. Anyway, there's 12 baseball games tomorrow in the state tournament, which are scattered throughout several college locations for the public school games as well as the higher seed's high school's for the non-public schools, which is a new rule this year. Every winner advances to play in Toms River for their respective group titles. Here is my records through Friday.

33-24 in Group I games
37-22 in Group II games
34-26 in Group III games
36-24 in Group IV games
17-6 in Non-Public A games
12-5 in Non-Public B games
169-107 Overall
  • The Iron Hills Conference has done a very good job in this tournament with 3 teams still alive in Randolph, Seton Hall and West Essex. You have to think that at this point, Randolph and West Essex are the favorite in their group to bring home the titles and you can never count out Seton Hall Prep.
  • Washington Township once again proves how they are a South Jersey power you can never count out with an improbable run in their section to capture the South, Group IV title as a 13 seed. The other 2 seeds to win as a double digit seed were Spotswood and Lakeland, who were both 11 seeds.
  • Seton Hall Prep upset what was considered by many to be the #1 team in New Jersey with a 7-5 win over Don Bosco. They have another extremely tough opponent when they travel to Flemington tomorrow to take on Immaculata with a sectional championship on the line.
  • It's only fitting that St. Joe's Metuchen and Bishop Eustace do battle tomorrow for a sectional championship. Both have been very impressive so far with Joe's outscoring their competition 29-8 and Eustace outscoring their competition 27-3. It should be a great game tomorrow and I think the winner has a decent chance to beat Immaculata or Seton Hall Prep.

And now onto my picks for tomorrow.

Group I
#1 Whippany Park over #4 Emerson Boro
#1 Robbinsville over #3 Pitman

Group II
#2 West Essex over #7 Ramsey
#11 Spotswood over #3 Audubon

Group III
#3 Cranford over #11 Lakeland
#3 Ocean City over #4 Hopewell Valley

Group IV
#1 Randolph over #2 Bridgewater-Raritan
#5 Jackson Memorial over#13 Washington Township

Non-Public A
#6 Seton Hall Prep over #1 Immaculata
#1 St. Joe's Metuchen over #2 Bishop Eustace

Non-Public B
#2 St. Mary's Rutherford over #1 Morristown-Beard
#4 St. Rose over #3 Gloucester Catholic

So those are my picks for tomorrow. Many of the games should be great games and pit some of the best teams in the state against each other. I'm looking forward to it as well as the championship games on Saturday. I'll be back on Friday to do more of an extensive preview on each team and see how they stack up with each other in the state group finals. Good luck to every team playing tomorrow.

NJ State Tournament Recap Through Sectional Semfinals/Picks for Today's Games

The state tournament is down to 48 teams. There are 8 teams remaining in each group so 8*6=48. After today the field is cut to 24 and after Tuesday, the field is cut down to the final 12 who will travel to Toms River to play for their group championship. Here is the tournament summary so far.

  • Mercer County still has 4 teams alive which is a pretty impressive number considering how small their county is and generally looked down upon when it comes to some sports. One will be knocked out today as Hopewell Valley and W Windsor North are playing for the sectional title. Robbinsville also has a great shot to win a sectional today while Notre Dame will likely have their hands full against St. Joe's Metuchen.
  • There's only 5 Shore Conference teams remaining and one of those will be knocked out today as Jackson is playing Manalapan. Henry Hudson and Red Bank Catholic will have their hands full today playing tough Robbinsville and Bishop Eustace teams. Although, St. Rose is an underdog I like their chances today to get a win down at Holy Cross and they are seemingly the team right now along with the Jackson/Manalapan winner who looks like they have the best chance to walk away from this tournament with a title.
  • Butler High School is trying their best to imitate their collegiate name by having a Cinderella run of their own as a 15 seed. They've somehow managed to outscore their competition 45-1 through the first 3 games. Northern Highlands is still alive too as a 16 seed and they're playing the 11 so regardless, an improbable team is going to win the title in North I, Group III.
  • South Jersey continues to be pretty dominant in baseball having teams from all over still alive which is really showcasing how good South Jersey baseball is. New Egypt, Pitman, Buena, Audubon, Highland Regional, Ocean City, Washington Township, Lenape, St. Joe's Metuchen, Notre Dame, Red Bank Catholic, Bishop Eustace, Holy Cross, St. Rose, Gloucester Catholic and Sacred Heart are all still in it.
  • The best games today will probably be:
    2) West Essex vs. 1) Hackettstown
    5) Morristown vs. 3) Cranford
    6) W Windsor North vs. 4) Hopewell Valley
    6) Manalapan vs. 5) Jackson Memorial
    5) Pope John XXIII vs. 1) Immaculata
    6) Seton Hall Prep vs. 2) Don Bosco
    4) Notre Dame vs. 1) St. Joe's Metuchen
    3) Red Bank Catholic vs. 2) Bishop Eustace
    3) Gloucester Catholic vs. 2) Sacred Heart

Here are my records going into today.

30-23 in Group I games
34-21 in Group II games
30-26 in Group III games
33-23 in Group IV games
14-5 in Non-Public A games
9-4 in Non -Public B games
150-102 Overall

Now onto my picks for today's sectional championships and the Non-Public sectional semifinals games.

North I, Group I
#4 Emerson Boro over #15 Butler

North II, Group I
#1 Whippany Park over #2 High Tech

Central, Group I
#1 Robbinsville over #7 Henry Hudson

South, Group I
#4 New Egypt over #3 Pitman

North I, Group II
#7 Ramsey over #1 North Warren

North II, Group II
#2 West Essex over #1 Hackettstown

Central, Group II
#11 Spotswood over #4 Governor Livingston

South, Group II
#4 Buena over #3 Audubon

North I, Group III
#11 Lakeland over #16 Northern Highlands

North II, Group III
#3 Cranford over #5 Morristown

Central, Group III
#4 Hopewell Valley over #6 W Windsor Noth

South, Group III
#3 Ocean City over #1 Highland Regional

North I, Group IV
#1 Randolph over #2 Livingston

North II, Group IV
#2 Bridgewater-Raritan over #13 Edison

Central, Group IV
#6 Manalapan over #5 Jackson Mmeorial

South, Group IV
#13 Washington Township over #3 Lenape

Non-Public North A
#5 Pope John XXIII over #1 Immaculata
#6 Seton Hall Prep over #2 Don Bosco

Non-Public South A
#1 St. Joe's Metuchen over #4 Notre Dame
#2 Bishop Eustace over #3 Red Bank Catholic

Non-Public North B
#1 Morristown-Beard over #12 Newark Academy
#2 St. Mary's Rutherford over #6 Dwight-Englewood

Non-Public South B
#4 St. Rose over #1 Holy Cross
#2 Sacred Heart over #3 Gloucester Catholic

So those are my predictions for today. Come back Tuesday to check out how the tournament has progressed as well as my picks for the 12 games on Tuesday, 8 of those are the Public Group Semifinals while the other 4 games will be some great matchups pitting the Non-Public schools against each other with sectional titles on the line. Every winner on Tuesday will punch their ticket to the final field of 12 in Toms River for next Saturday.

NJ State Tournament Recap Through 2nd Round/Picks for Today's Games

This has really been a great tournament so far. While there are a lot of top seeds around still, there are a substantial amount of low seeded teams who remain in the final 96 teams. It wouldn't surprise me at all if one of those teams went on to win an improbable title because you never know what can happen in baseball. It's easily the most contentious tournament of all sports in New Jersey. Here is the tournament summary so far.
  • Currently 3 top 20 teams have been eliminated. #11 Toms River South lost to Clearview Regional in the first round 7-3. #18 Wall lost to Red Bank Regional in the second round 7-3 and #19 Paramus lost to Northern Highlands in the first round 5-2. Teams from here on out in the top 20 will start dropping like flies. Here are the ranked matchups for today.
#20 Morristown vs. #1 South Plainfield
    #4 Jackson vs. #5 Monroe
#10 Pope John vs. #6 Delbarton
#14 Seton Hall Prep vs. #9 St. Joe's Montvale
    #16 Cranford vs. #17 Scotch Plains-Fanwood
  • The GMC has fared solidly over the tournament so far with hopes still alive in each bracket. Those teams are South River in Group I, Spotswood in Group II, South Plainfield in Group III, a shocking Woodbridge-Edison matchup to decide who goes on to play for the sectional title in Group IV as well as Monroe. St. Joe's Metuchen and Bishop Ahr are both alive as well playing CBA and Red Bank Catholic today in the Non-Public A Bracket. Lastly, Timothy Christian is joining the GMC next year and they are alive as well although face a very tough matchup against St. Rose from Belmar, who's a perennial powerhouse.
  • 15 seed Butler has outscored their competition in their first 2 games 32-0.
  • Many Shore teams are still alive. They just weren't the ones people expected to be. The teams still playing are Henry Hudson in Group I, 15th seeded Manasquan in Group II, Monmouth Regional and Red Bank Regional in Central Group III who got their both with big upsets over powerhouses Ocean and Wall Townships, Central Regional in South Group III, Jackson, Manalapan and 15th seeded Toms River North, who just got back to .500 in Group IV, CBA, Red Bank Catholic and St. John Vianney in Non-Public A, and St. Rose and Mater Dei in Non-Public B. Of the teams alive, I think their best 3 chances for a state title are Central Regional, Jackson and St. Rose.
  • 15 teams still in the tournament are seeded 10th or lower.

There are several more intriguing games but needless to say it should be a great day for baseball in New Jersey with 5 games featuring ranked teams. The most interesting game to me is Jackson vs. Monroe and think the winner of that could be looking at a state title. I'm intrigued as well by the Seton Hall Prep game because they're an underdog here and I beleive they are a live dog and always put up good fights. I'm taking them to win today. I'll get caught up with my records after today but for now here are my picks.

NJ State Tournament Recap through First Round/Picks for the Second Round

It might not be March, but the madness is certainly abundant with the baseball results from Monday's New Jersey High School State Tournament. Out of 64 possible upsets for seeds 13 or lower, 13 actually happened which equates to roughly 20%. That's one huge upset in just about every five games or so. Keep in mind that in past years all these sub .500 teams wouldn't even have made the tournament and this year when they're given the opportunity to, they're wreaking havoc. Here's a summary of the tournament so far in case you missed it or in case you're interested.

  • Four Top 20 teams eliminated-Toms River South whose only losses came 2-1 to Brick, 1-0 to Toms River North and 12-2 to Jackson were eliminated as a 2 seed with a 19-3 record to 15th seeded Clearview Regional from Mullica Hill in Gloucester County. Because it is a Group with bigger schools, Clearview had a modest seed with a decent 12-7 record and it isn't as big an upset on paper than at first glance. Clearview's pitcher Shane Taylor who is headed to North Carolina only allowed 4 hits while striking out 6 and giving up 3 walks. He gave up all 3 runs and pitched a complete game to move himself to a 5-2 record. Brett Soloman hit two homeruns and drove in four runs to help spark Clearview over 4th ranked Toms River South.

  • While many people think that is a big upset, to me, the biggest upset of the day was Paramus losing to Northern Highlands. Paramus is a school with a decent amount of baseball history and usually has pretty good teams. While Northern Highlands does have a decent schedule, they don't have a schedule near what Paramus has. Paramus has wins over schools still alive in the state tournament such as Pascack Valley and Lakeland as well as their win of the year on opening day over Don Bosco. So to me, for a 21-5 team to lose to a 10-12 team with a weaker schedule is extremely surprising and really opens up North I, Group III. Paramus was ranked 6th in the state.

  • Other two teams eliminated in the top 20 were: Steinert(22-5) at #11 and Montgomery(15-7) at #16. Everyone was praising Montgomery for their win in the county championship over Immaculata over the weekend...funny how everything changes so quickly. I'd look for one or two more of the teams in the top 20 to be gone after Friday.

  • This has to be noted because if this persists, Newark schools should not be allowed in the tournament. Allow teams in tough conferences with bad records these spots instead of Market Street in Newark and other schools like that. Newark had 6 teams in the state tournament. Here are their results. Hoboken beat Universiy 18-0. Jonathan Dayton beat Newark Arts 18-0. High Tech beat University Charter 9-0. Garfield beat Market Street 19-1. Caldwell beat Science Park 24-1. Shore Regional beat Weequahic 18-1. So in those 6 games, Newark was outscored 106-3. That's embarassing. There's no way around it and if these teams put up games like this for maybe two more years, get them out. It's ridiculous. The surrounding schools didn't fare much better either with teams like Harrison losing 10-0 and Bloomfield Tech losing 16-0 as a 3 seed.

  • The Shore Conference has had an impressive showing with a 14, 15 and 16 seed all pulling out upsets. They had over an .800 winning percentage in their state tournament so far and also had several matchups in which two Shore teams played each other, so they were guaranteed to advance. Because many of these seeds are lower, I suspect that they will have a rougher time on Friday and after that it will be interesting to see what happens.

  • Millville bounces back after being bounced last year from the state tournament when they fell to Toms River East. They defeat Cherry Hill West 9-0.

Here's how I did Monday. Truth be told, this isn't the basketball tournament and I think through the first round, I already have half the losses I had in the entire basketball tournament lol.

19-10 in Group I games
21-10 in Group II games
23-9 in Group III games
17-15 in Group IV games
80-44 Overall

There's three games today(Thurs.) before states goes into high gear tomorrow. The three today are: Lenape-Toms River East, Bishop Ahr-Monsignor Donovan, and St. John Vianney-Paul VI. Since I'm getting my car back today, I'll probably go to the Bishop Ahr-Monsignor Donovan game and since that game is at 2:30, I'll try to get to the St. John Vianney-Paul VI game in Holmdel afterwards. On Friday, I'll be too busy to post anything because I've been asked to scout CBA-St. Augustine down in Richland so I have a couple hour drive ahead of me. It is also my 21st birthday, so I may head to Atlantic City or something afterwards, so my day will be pretty full. Here are my picks for today's and tomorrow's games. In caps are the teams who I picked as my favorites for each section. Originally there were three, so there may be less now that some teams have been eliminated. In asterisks are the teams I had in my original brackets to advance past this round, so if there's no asterisks, it means I didn't pick the matchup right in the first round and in some cases I missed both teams, such as Emerson Boro vs. Park Ridge and Midland Park vs. Wallington.

Getting Caught Up/High School Baseball Essay/ H.S. Baseball Tournament First Round Picks for Groups I-IV

Sorry about the long hiatus guys. Between getting caught up in watching the NCAA Tournament as well as the start of baseball and also finishing up the school year with papers, presentations, etc. I haven't had the time to make any new posts. I am taking one class both halfs of the summer and possibly a job or an internship, but I should have much more time to write now. Perhaps its good I stopped making NCAA predictions because needless to say, I did not have Northern Iowa over Kansas haha although unlike many people in the country, from watching as much college basketball as I have, I was well familiar with guys such as Ali Faroukmanesh and knew he could step up in big spots and he did twice and shocked really the nation with the second one. To my credit, I did have Duke and West Virginia in the final 4. If anyone had the left side of the bracket's two teams in the semifinals, I really need you to go with me to Vegas or something haha. But I do remember reading back in October that this year's Butler team was a once in a generation team. They will be remembered for what they did a long time...but it would've been nice to see Gordon Hayward nail that half court three as time expired in what all probability would have been considered the best tournament championship game ever...it may have already been.

In front of me, I have this year's high school tournament brackets for New Jersey. To me, this is easily the most unpredictable of all the championships in high school sports, because you are only as good as your next day's pitcher. Great teams have off days. Mediocre teams can overachieve and in some cases, teams who play like Jekyll and Hyde suddenly get hot which is what happened to my high school's team my senior year. My senior year could not have ended personally for me any better. As someone who had managed St. Joe's Metuchen's basketball team for three years, we wound up never winning the county tournament as well as never winning a sectional or state final, losing to CBA, our archrivals, both my junior and senior year. I decided to try to be a part of a team in the spring with a last ditch effort to possibly be part of a championship winning team before I graduated. Because we get out so early, it also would fill a large void before I started working in the summer between May and June. So in essence and what I thought was great about the end of my senior year was that for the last 3 weeks of our season, since we were done with class, baseball was the sole reason for me to keep going to school and I actually think that may have relaxed us in the state tournament time. We wound up losing in the Quarterfinals to Carteret and then qualified in the state tournament with just a 10-8 record....but then our luck seemed to change. Our first round opponent was Red Bank Catholic who we got 10 runned by earlier in the season and we wound up using our ace pitcher who pretty much had as dominant a run in states as you could possibly have. We won 6-2. We then played top seeded Notre Dame, who was a decent team, they just played nowhere near the competition we do most of the time so that greatly benefitted us. We went to their place and won in as impressive a fashion as you could ever beat a top seed, 12-0. Although Coach gave our pitcher a one hitter, you could have definitely made the case that the hit was an error which would've been a phenomonal accoomplishment, especially playing the 1 seed. This perhaps is where our luck reached its peak although I beleive we would have beaten them regardless. We played at Holy Cross at a really random 1:00PM start time on a Friday afternoon on June 1 because Holy Cross's graduation was later that night so I don't think their heads were in the game as much as it normally would have been. Our bats picked up right where they left off and we destroyed Holy Cross 14-2. And easily the game I was anticipating that would eventually happen with one last shot to beat them before I graduated was a game against CBA on a neutral field, and for a sectional championship no less. Going in we obviously knew it was going to be a grind it out game and that's exactly what it was. It was the greatest game I've seen St. Joe's play in watching them over the last 3 years or so, although I think I would always take St. Joe's basketball team's 4OT victory on the road vs. Top 5 in the state Holy Spirit as the best game I've been involved with at St. Joe's. But nonetheless, I don't think I've ever been prouder of a team than that day where we showed a hell of a lot of heart and desire and knew that some of these guys didn't want their playing careers to end. We were facing Kyle Slate who would eventually get drafted by the Phillies. He came into that game with a 10-0 record and a .6 ERA. We wound up getting a run across on a wild pitch in the Top of the 8th inning to take a 1-0 lead and we would hold on in the bottom to become sectional champions. Not a bad way to end my high school career as manager. Obviously, I wanted us to get to CBA and win that game, but I thought as long as we won our first two state games including knocking off the 1 seed that would have made our season. After the CBA game, we played Seton Hall Prep for the state championship three days after Rick Porcello had been underdrafted for the Detroit Tigers so I think he was coming in with extra motivation. Unfortunately I really believe our players mentally lost the game before it was even played. We had to play a stellar game just to compete with them and since we were mentally and psychologically fragile about facing him, we lost the game before it was even played. Granted we probably wouldn't have beaten them anyway. I'll never forget looking at the state breakdowns that day in the paper...it said St. Joe's Metuchen 16-12 vs. Seton Hall Prep 33-1. It really felt like Hoosiers and in my graduation year no less. It was really great that I got to experience a great run like this to win a title just as I was about to leave high school. But I think the important thing to take out of this is that we were like Hoosiers all along. We only finished 10-8 as of state cutoff and were underdogs each game. Even though we walked away losers after the Seton Hall game, we were still champions which is something I think many people doubted we could be going into states. Baseball is a funny game and there is no rhyme or reason to things that happen. There are no St. Pat's or St. Anthony's in baseball who rely on their legacy and just overall physical domination to win games. All it takes is a hot pitcher. Just like we had with Kevin Poll my senior year who in his games, we outscored our opponents 21-4. One or more of these stories will come into fruition this year...it will be interesting to see who will it be. And now to my picks...

In each bracket I'll capitalize my three teams who I think could potentially win the section.

Publics Groups I-IV Sectional Semifinals are Tuesday, May 25th. Non-Public's Quarterfinal action is then.
Publics Groups I-IV Sectional Finals are Friday, May 28th. Non-Public's Semifinals are going on as well.
Public Groups I-IV Group Semifinals are Tuesday, June 1st. Non-Public's Sectional Finals are going on as well.
On Saturday June 5th, down in Toms River at Toms River North, South and East High Schools, the Group championships in baseball and softball are being played so come down to check them out and see future college players as well as the future of High School Baseball. It's a really convenient way to check out a bunch of great teams all at once. Below are my predictions(in bold) for who will be playing and who will win in Toms River.

Group I
#4 Lyndhurst over #1 Ridgefield
#2 South Amboy over #4 New Egypt

#4 Lyndhurst over #2 South Amboy

Group II
#2 West Essex gets revenge on #2 Pequannock in the same round from last year and defeats them.
#1 Middlesex over #2 Haddon Township

#2 West Essex over #1 Middlesex

Group III
#1 South Plainfield over #3 Passaic Valley
#2 Wall over #4 Central Regional

#1 South Plainfield over #2 Wall

Group IV
#1 Randolph also gets revenge from last year by defeating #4 Hunterdon Central.
#2 Toms River South over #1 Monroe

#2 Toms River South has the hometown behind them and with their help wins a Group IV title over #1 Randolph

Non-Public A
#1 Immaculata over #6 Seton Hall Prep
#1 St. Joe's (Metuchen) over #2 Bishop Eustace

#1 St. Joe's (Metuchen) over #1 Immaculata

Non-Public B
I guess I should put a disclaimer on this one. For some strange reason, Hudson Catholic was moved out of the A bracket where they should have faced Immaculata in the first round. On the NJSIAA website, Hudson Catholic is a A school rather than a B school. A school's are bigger than B school's so by putting Hudson Catholic in here, they should be at an advantage. At some point, some one will probably realize they don't belong here and should've been in A as a 16 seed all along where they would've in all likelihood lost to Immaculata first round. In this spot with a bracket MUCH weaker than North A, they are a dangerous team and I think good enough to win the section. Here's hoping to all hell breaking loose once they find out the NJSIAA's error.

#10 Hudson Catholic over #1 Morristown-Beard
#4 St. Rose over #3 Gloucester Catholic

#4 St. Rose wins their third Non-Public B title in a row with a rout of #10 Hudson Catholic.

It may be unrealistic to have 5 GMC teams in the remaining 20 teams, but I imagine they will have at least 2 or 3. The county has showed in its tournament how deep the county is and how anyone can make a run any given day. Just look at yesterday when the 16 and 20 seeds were doing battle for a spot in the championship. Now the 16 seed will have a shot to be the lowest seed to win the county title. While the top teams are very good like St. Joe's, South Plainfield and Monroe, I certainly give teams such as Middlesex or South River a chance to make some noise in this tournament. It will be interesting to see and I think there is definitely a possibility of at least 2 GMC teams walking away from Toms River with group titles.

Last note, my NBA picks for the conference finals are the Los Angeles Lakers in 5 over the Phoenix Suns and the Orlando Magic in 6 over the Boston Celtics. I think Magic defeats the Lakers in 6 this year. Somehow my title pick is still alive haha. Hopefully the Magic can pull it out this time around.

NCAA Tournament Picks for Friday

Here's how I did yesterday. Could've been worse, could've been better.

2-2 Midwest Regional
2-2 West Regional
3-1 East Regional
3-1 South Regional
10-6 Overall Record

Here are all my picks for today. I have a feeling there will be no upsets today after all the upsets we saw yesterday.

Midwest Regional
#7 Oklahoma State over #10 Georgia Tech-7:15PM
#5 Michigan State over #12 New Mexico State-7:20PM
#2 Ohio State over #15 UC-Santa Barbara-9:35PM
#4 Maryland over #13 Houston-9:40PM

West Regional
#6 Xavier over #11 Minnesota-12:25PM
#3 Pittsburgh over #14 Oakland-2:45PM
#9 Florida State over #8 Gonzaga-7:10PM
#1 Syracuse over #16 Vermont-9:30PM

East Regional
#2 West Virginia over #15 Morgan State-12:15PM
#12 Cornell over #5 Temple-12:30PM
#10 Missouri over #7 Clemson-2:35PM
#4 Wisconsin over #13 Wofford-2:50PM

South Regional
#13 Siena over #4 Purdue-2:30PM
#12 Utah State over #5 Texas A&m-4:45PM
#1 Duke over #16 Arkansas-Pine Bluff-7:25PM
#9 Louisville over #8 California-9:45PM

So those are all my picks for today. The field is down to 32 after the day is done. There's 8 games tomorrow, a couple of which are pretty odd if you ask me like Tennessee-Ohio and Butler Murray State. I don't think a lot of people predicted those two. I'll be abck with my predictions tomorow as well as how I did today.

Midwest and West Preview and Picks for today

On paper and in the opinion of many hoops fans, the Midwest Region looks to be the toughest region of all four. They have the best team in the country in 32-2 Kansas, a likely 1 seed if not for the injury to Evan Turner in number 2 Ohio State, perennial powerhouses in Georgetown, Maryland, Michigan State and Tennessee. They also have teams with frequent bids as of late with UNLV, Northern Iowa, Georgia Tech, San Diego State and New Mexico State. Obviously, the teams I expect to come out of this region are one of the top 3. If I had to bet, I'd pick Kansas, but nothing is a sure thing in this particular region and any of the top seeds are susceptible to an upset.

Midwest Region
Records/How they Got Here

2) Ohio State 27-7/Big Ten Champion

16) Lehigh 22-10/Patriot Champion

Favorites
To me, there's only two favorites in this bracket. The frontrunner, by far, are the Kansas Jayhawks. They are the most complete team in the country. They have everything an NCAA team needs in order to win the national championship. They have inside strength with double double threat Cole Aldrich, they have good shooters in Sherron Collins, Xavier Henry, the Morris Brothers, Tyshawn Taylor, etc. They have guys who can get to the hoop and perhaps most importantly, come this time of year, they have the experience and depth. On paper, I don't know if this team is as good as the Championship team in 2008 but it's close and personally I think this bracket's toughness is a little overrated, particularly in KU's section. I think they handle their second round and Sweet Sixteen opponents fairly easily while Georgetown and Ohio State could possibly get upset in the second round or Sweet Sixteen. Because of their seed and because they've become everyon'e favorite overnight, I have to put Ohio State here. I have no clue why everyone likes them to win the Championship. Sure they have four good scorers in National player of the year candidate Evan Turner (19.5 ppg), William Buford (14.3 ppg) Jon Diebler (12.6 ppg) and David Lighty (12.4 ppg), but they have absolutely no depth. Plus I have a feeling everyone's picking them just because they may have the best player in the nation. Many times the best player's team doesn't win the NCAA Tournament. Just thinking about St. Joe's, we didn't even win a state game with Andrew Bynum, so having one of the better players doesn't mean you're a great team and that's where I think a lot of people picking OSU get confused. They are also in a mediocre conference in the Big Ten. The conference isn't that good. Purdue's probably going to exit early. The furthest I see Michigan State going is Sweet 16. Wisconsin's probably gone early. It's just a weak conference year after year. They play solid defense agianst other teams in the conference and that's because neither team can score anything. Turner's a phenomonal player leading the conference in scoring and rebounding, but you can't do everything by yourself this time of year and that's why I expect them to get upset in the second round against the Oklahoma State-Georgia Tech winner.

Dark Horses
There's a few dark horses here. I like Georgetown but they have been inconsistent this year. Sometimes the combination of Greg Monroe, Chris Wright and Austin Freeman can totally click like they did against Syracuse last week, but at times can really struggle like in their loss to Old Dominion. Austin Freeman was also diagnosed with diabetes recently so it will be interesting to see if that affects his play. If those three do not play well, they could be headed for an early exit, but if they play like they did throughout last week, they could be headed for another deep run. All five shooters shoot above 46% and average more than 8 a game. They are limited on the bench so their starters, especially Greg Monroe, will have to stay out of foul trouble. I also like the Tennessee/San Diego State winner. Tennessee should never be seeded in a million years the 6 seed. They have beaten teams like Kansas, Kentucky and Florida ths season. I like them because they have a good balance of offense and defense. They shoot 46% overall. Scotty Hopson averages 13 points per game. Wayne Chism averages 12.5 points per game and 7 rebounds per game, Bobby Maze and J.P. Prince both average right around 9 points per game as well. They have allowed less than 40% shooting from the field and 29.1% from three-point range. I like San Diego State as well, because they have a good inside-outside combination of Kawhi Leonard and Malcolm Thomas. Leonard averages 12.6 points per game and nearly 10 rebounds per game. Malcom Thomas averages 11 points per game and 8 rebounds per game, so between them they average 24 points and 18 rebounds per game. If they rebound liek they did all season when they had one of the nation's highest rebounding margins, they are a team that could make some noise in this tournament. They have some scoring on the team besides those two as well. As usual, San Diego State shoots very well from the field, shooting 47.7% this season. What could do them in though, is their very low free throw shooting percentage. They made just about 3 out of every 5 free throws this season shooting 61.7%.

Upsets
At least in the First Round, this I think will be the least upset heavy. I only have one of the higher seeds (besides the 8) going out here.
#11 San Diego State over #6 Tennessee

Players to Watch-This is an expanded list because I think with a championship contending team like KU, it is more of a team effort here than on a team such as UK where it's basically Wall and Cousins. So I put all 5 starters on this list. In addition, I think the talent in the lower seeds is much more stacked in this bracket than perhaps others. There are studs like Aubrey Coleman from Houston, Leonard and Thomas from San Diego State who could surprise people. I think the lesser known talent here could provide some of the bigger names and moments when this year's tourney's all said and done.

Favorites
Syracuse and Kansas State are the favorites in the Western Regional. Syracuse took a bit of a blow last week losing theirstarting Center Arinze Onuaku who averages 11 points and 6 rebounds per game. Luckily, they probably won't need him in their first or second round game against Vermont and either Gonzaga or Florida State. But if he is still hurt going into next week, it could spell doom for the Orangemen. Syracuse has had a great (if unexpected season). They won 24 of their first 25 games which in a conference as tough as the Big East is virtually unheard of. They have an extremely high field goal percentage at nearly 52% and are the highest scoring team in the nation at 82 points per game. However, although they have had 7 players who have scored 20 points at some point this season, they are not particularly deep and their 67% ft shooting can be troublesome at times. Still Jim Boeheim has one of the better defensive teams he's ever coached and their 2-3 zone hold opponents to 39.9% shooting. The Orangemen this season went 11-2 in neutral an road court games. Wesley Johnson at 15.7 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game and his teammates should be a little too tough to handle for their opponents this week and if they get back Onuaku, they will be a main contender for their second title in 7 years. I like Kansas State as well and actually am picking them for the final four although the more and more I think about it, I may regret not picking BYU over them because I like them a lot too. But Kansas State has one of the best guard combos in the country with Denis Clemente and Jacob Pullen. They average 35 points per game and 7 assists per game. They have a number of ood wins against teams such as Dayton, Xavier, UNLV, Texas A&M and Baylor. They play with a lot of toughness that helps come tournament time but at the same time the overagressiveness could hurt them too, because the refs tend to call more whistles during this time of year. They can be turnover prone and are another team that struggles at the line, but at their best they will be very tough to handle. I think whoever wins the BYU/FL vs. KSU game makes a run to the elite eight...I just hope its KSU although I have BYU in a couple brackets.

Dark Horses
It's become a common practice to say this as they have become a Midwestern Gonzaga, but Xavier being seeded lower than I can remember recently could definitely sneak up on some people. They are deep playing 9 players usually and have a good core of starting players with two sophomores, two juniors and one senior. One of the sophomores is Jordan Crawford who doesn't look or play like a sophomore at all with his 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal per game. At times, he can play a little selfishly which could elimiate Xavier, but they have enough around him that they should be able to get the job done in the first round and have the potential to make yet another deep run in this year's tourney. They get 9 points and 8 rebounds a game from Jamel McLean. They get close to a double double as well from Jason Love and Terrell Holloway also scores 11 points per game and was a big part of their Sweet 16 run last year. They are 12th nationally in scoring at 80 ponts but are another team who play solid defense as well only allowing 29.5% from three point range. BYU is another team who I think is capable of making a deep run in this year's tourney. This is a team who I pick every year who always seem to let me down. They've had winnable games the last couple year's but were outplayed by Texas A&M both years. I feel that they are a better team this year and Florida is weaker this year than Texas A&M's been the last 2 years. Plus the experience helps and expect them to be extra mtoivated this year and at the very least get a win in the matinee tomorrow which commences this year's tournament. They lead the nation in scoring margin at 18.5 points as well as free throw shooting at 78.4%. They ar second in scoring with 83.5 points per game. They are third in three point percentage at 42.1%> Jimmer Fredette might not be a household name now but if BYU has a decent tournament, he may be the Stephen Curry of the 2010 Tournament. He averages 20.6 points per game in addition to nearly 5 assists per game. His teammate Jackson Emery averages 13 points and is 4th in the country in steals. They are a relatively experienced team with a freshman, a sophomore, 2 juniors and a senior. Their best wins are UNLV, UTEP and San Diego State. I expect their scoring to be a big factor tomorrow against Florida who looks a little sluggish on offense at times and expect them to finally get their first win in NCAA Tournament play since 1993 and break a consecutive three year bad luck drought in the tournament.

Now onto the previews for the right side of the bracket.

I think upon seeing this half of the bracket most people thought thought two things. The first was that Duke has a pretty easy road to the Elite Eight and second is how packed Kentucky's bracket is. Temple's a 5. Cornell's a 12. A solid Wofford team who nearly beat Pitt early on this season is a 13. This bracket from top to bottom is stacked. Even a 15 seed like Morgan State has some experience and had they not been playing a red hot West Virginia team, I would have given them a shot at an upset. Their seed doesn't help either. A 15 over 2 hasn't happened in nearly a decade. I'm looking forward to that bracket in particular because so many teams can go deep. Kentucky isn't invincible as a lot of people saw in their game yesterday vs. Mississippi State to capture the SEC Tournament title. I'm sure some people even have them losing to Texas or Wake Forest in the second round. No one knows what to expect from teams like Marquette, Washington, and New Mexico. Any of them are capable of losing first round, but also having runs to the elite eight. This to me, is the bracket to watch.

East Region
Records/How they Got Here
1) Kentucky 32-2/SEC Champion
2) West Virginia 27-6/Big East Champion
3) New Mexico 29-4/Mountain West at-large
4) Wisconsin 23-8/Big Ten at-large
5) Temple 29-5/Atlantic 10 Champion
6) Marquette 22-11/Big East at-large
7) Clemson 21-10/Atlantic Coast at-large
8) Texas 24-9/Big 12 at-large
9) Wake Forest 19-10/Atlantic Coast at-large
10) Missouri 22-10/Big 12 at-large
11) Washington 24-9/Pacific-10 Champion
12) Cornell 27-4/Ivy League Champion
13) Wofford 26-8/Southern Champion
14) Montana 22-9/Big Sky Champion
15) Morgan State 27-9/Mid-Eastern Athletic Champion
16) East Tennessee State 20-14/Atlantic Sun Champion

Favorites
Obviously, the 2 favorites here are Kentucky and West Virginia. If I had to pick of the two, I'd choose West Virginia. They have a lot more experience than Kentucky and are red-hot right now. I think the Big East Conference was much, much tougher than the SEC this year and games that West Virginia get in the Big East helps prepare them for the NCAA Tournament a lot of the time. They have been phenomonal late in the season in the final minutes of games winning three nailbiters, two of which were won by senior Da'Sean Butler, whose averaging 17 points per game. Four of their six losses have been by seven or fewer points. One of their major flaws is their free throw shooting, which has been suspect at times. I also think they have the best coach in this bracket with Bob Huggins who has proven time and time again how good of a coach he is. I think their tough defense and experience carries them to a win over Kentucky in the Elite Eight. A lot of people obviously like Kentucky, as they should. They probably have the most NBA talent of any collegiate team, but are also very young. Another team with a great coach in John Calipari, who has had several deep runs in the tournament. Obviously this is one of the main storylines in this bracket. More so than any other top seed, anything other than a Championship is a bust. Kansas and Syracuse has recently won titles and Duke obviously has had a phenomonal last 2 decades, but Kentucky hasn't had as much success as of late and this would be a big step back into prominence if they were to win the title. In addition, there's a very good chance that their best two players, John Wall and Demarcus Cousins are gone after this year, so they would have to start from scratch again. As talented as they are, they are also extremely young which is a major caution sign when it comes to picking them. I'm not falling into the trap that some people are when they pick the winner of Texas/Wake over Kentucky. I really don't see that happening. Wake Forest is lucky to be an 9 seed, and Kentucky is much better than Texas. But they could trip up later to a Wisconsin, Temple, etc. I think their youth will hurt them and I also think in tough spots, the two star players will play a little more selfishly which I think could doom them.

Dark Horses
There are a lot of dark horses here. I can see a number of teams making runs to the sweet sixteen that not many people would expect. The first one is New Mexico. Many people coming in probably don't know a lot about New Mexico and are questioning them being seeded third. But the Mountain West Conference is usually pretty tough and they're battle tested. They've played (and beat) tough out of conference competition such as California and Texas A&M. They've also beaten BYU in conference play. A 29-4 record is also obviously very good. They have very good guard play and in the NCAA Tournament, teams with good guards are usually in good shape. Darington Hobson averages 16 points per game and 9 rebounds per game. They get plenty of scoring from their supporting cast and are proficient three point shooters. I think Coach Steve Alford has a team capable of potentially getting to the sectional final. I think the Marquette-Wisconsin winner could potentially win a couple games. I was impressed by Marquette's toughness down the stretch last week in the game vs. Villanova. They play with a lot of heart and that's something that can't be measured in the NCAA Tournament. They have a very experienced team with 2 starting seniors, 2 starting juniors and 1 starting sophomore. Lazar Hayward as proven himself a very capable leader and can carry the team on his back. He has averaged 18 points per game and 8 rebounds per game. While they do shoot free throws very well, the thing that continually has doomed Marquette in recent years, such as their game vs. Stanford where they couldn't stop the Lopez brothers is their lack of height. A team with height has a great shot to beat them. That is what makes this bracket so interesting. New Mexico, Marquette and Washington don't really excel in post play. They are all guard oriented teams so those games are usually shootouts rather than grind out and slower paced games. With Washington, their best two players are Quincy Pondexter and Isiah Thomas. Pondexter scores 20 points per game and pulls down 8 boards. He could make a big difference in the Marquette game. Isaiah Thomas is also another major scoring threat scoring 17 a game. They are red-hot right now winning 7 games in a row, but the Pac-10 was dreadful this year. The top 2 or 3 Big East teams probably could've gone undefeated in the Pac-10. Their best win this year was probably the California game which put them into the tournament. If they had lost that, I don't think I'd be talking about them right now. They are extremely prolific on offense scoring 80.5 points per game which is first in the Pac-10 and 9th in the nation. They do play good defense and led the Pac-10 in rebounding for the third time in five years. My other two sleepers are whoever wins the Temple-Cornell game. Both teams are very underseeded in my opinion and I think Temple should've been given a 3 and Cornell at least a 10. I got a chance to see Temple this past Friday and they have a very good team again. Temple continues to pride themself on defense and have a relatively veteran team. However, I do worry about their scoring. Their best players are Ryan Brooks and Juan Fernandez in terms of points scored, but they can be inconsistent at times. If Fernandez struggles to score or is forced into some errors by the Big Red, they could be one and done. They've allowed only 28% shooting from 3 point range, but Cornell is very proficient in shooting the three and have a good field goal percentage overall, so it should make for a very interesting matchup. Cornell, on the other hand, won the Ivy League, their third straight title relatively easy going 13-1 in conference, their only loss to Penn. I really like this team's chances to do some damage in this year's tournament. Hopefully it'll be reparation for when I picked them to beat Stanford and they were down 30 at halftime two years ago so it'll really come full circle with a win (or a couple) in this year's tournament. Teams like this are always dangerous because it's their last go-around. This team has 5 starters returning from last year's team. They shoot 48 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from three point range. They do a great job of passing the ball averaging nearly 17 assists a game and have a good assist to turnover ratio. To Temple's advantage, they rely on the three at nearly 10 a game, but the Big Red have been red hot winning 15 of their last 16. Ryan Wittman is their player to watch averaging nearly 18 points per game. They have an inside presence too with 7 footer Jeff Foote who averages 12 points and 8 rebounds per game, which makes Cornell a team unlike any other team the Ivy League usually sees and what makes this team particularly formidable come Friday afternoon.

There is no question in this bracket that the favorite is Duke. Their path to the Elite Eight is pretty weak. The only team I think could potentially give them a challenge is Louisville in the second round. I think if they play California in the second round or Texas A&M or Purdue in the Sweet Sixteen, it will be a walk in the park for them. With how Villanova played down the stretch, I can't really consider them a favorite. They have a decent chance to win the South Region, but I personally like Baylor more than Villanova this season. Villanova almost lost to American last year and I really liked their team last year. Who's to say they can't have an early exit this year? Duke has an extremely experienced team which starts three seniors and two juniors. Their only bad loss was to North Carolina State. They played one of the nation's toughest schedules while still being the 1 seed in the ACC. The schedule will help them for the road they'll face in the tournament, but it shouldn't be too hard for them to make a deep run. They're also due for one to happen after early exits to Villanova, West Virginia and VCU in recent years.

Dark Horses
If ever there was a dark horse, Baylor would be it. They're getting pushed aside by the more glamorous teams-Duke, Villanova, Notre Dame, but I've liked what I've see over the season as well as the last couple years from Baylor. They are a well coached team by Scott Drew and have two great guards in LaceDarius Dunn and Tweety Carter. Dunn scores 19 points and dishes out 5 assists per game. Carter averages 16 points and 6 assists per game. They are as deadly a duo that a team could see in the tournament. Ekpe Udoh could make a huge difference inside the paint. He averages 13.5 points per game and almost 10 rebounds per game. He led the Big 12 in blocked shots and was second in rebounding. They also have a number of good wins beating teams such as Xavier, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Texas A&M and Texas (twice).
I'm not buying Notre Dame as a dark horse and actually am going to pick them to go out first round, but do think if they beat Old Dominion they could transform into a sleeper. They have gotten hot as of late and picked up their defensive play. I personally feel that they are tremendously overseeded considering they were "on the bubble" entering the Big East Tournament. After star forward Luke Harangody went down with an injury, their offense became more patient instead of being the high scoring and good shooting team that we were used to seeing. They are good three point shooters but Old Dominion matches up decently with them and frankly you could argue Dominion should be a 7 or an 8 seed as well. The other 2 teams I like as Dark Horses to do some damage is the winner of Richmond and Saint Mary's. Richmond is an experienced team who has played (and beaten) some very good teams this season such as Temple, Old Dominion and Missouri. They just lost to Temple in the Championship this weekend in a close game. Richmond has enjoyed one of its bst seasons in its history. They cracked the top 25 last month for the first time in almost 20 years. This team reminds me a lot of the Dayton team that pulled an upset on West Virginia last year. They play very good defense, holding teams to 39% shooting, but have more offense than the Flyers team had last year. Kevin Anderson averages 18 points per game. David Gonzalvez scoes 14 a game. Justin Harper scores 11 points per game and pulls down roughly 6 boards. They lack a lot of rebounding, but make up for it with their depth and good guard play, another trait which Dayton had last year. Saint Mary's on the other hand has a much more prolific offense. Their starters (Samhan-21.5 ppg, McConnell-13 ppg, Dellavedova-12.5 ppg, Allen-11 ppg, and Steindl 7.5 ppg) average 65 points per game without even going to the bench. Their ability to spread around the ball should be a major story in how this game plays out but Richmond has a big advantage defensively. They are very good three point shooters and their height will help them in their early matchups against Richmond and Villanova if they were to win their first round game. The Gaels shoot well from the line at 76%, but another big difference in the first round game is the depth of the bench. Mary's isn't very deep while Richmond is. That could certianly be a difference maker.
