Lakers Record
As many of you may have heard, Kobe Bryant set the Lakers record in scoring last night and congratulations to Kobe, but the media has once again really overblown this thing, especially with the comparisons. The bottom line is this, the fact that he is even being compared to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Magic Johnson's a joke. You could argue that Shaquille O'Neal was a better Laker than Kobe as well, because if it was just Kobe on that team, I don't think they would've won those 3 titles back in the early 00's. I was reading "Around the Horn" panelist J.A. Adande's list of the top 5 Lakers ever and Kareem wasn't even on it which is insane. He modernized basketball a little bit and was a good role model outside the sport too, the same goes for Magic where as good as a player he was on the court, he's done a lot off the court too in terms of philanthropical work. I would certainly put Kobe in the top five Lakers, but think there's a big gap in between Jabbar and Johnson and Kobe. Another thing is it's not too hard to be great when you're the only scorer on the team and you're the go-to-guy. The Lakers Showtime teams had several great players on it and for Johnson and Jabbar to still stand out that much, you know are great players. I love how ESPN was just showing the Lakers game and it was all about Kobe getting the record. You know what happened? They lost the game to the Grizzlies and it was like no one cared because Kobe had the record. Another reason why'd I'd take Magic or Kareem any day of the week. They're not selfish and it's not all about them unlike Kobe which he's certainly showed at various times throughout his career. To me he's not the best Laker and I'm sure I'm not the only one voicing that opinion.

ReplyDeleteForemost, I would like to state that I have never and will never want Kobe Bryant to win or play well in a game, but he has been the best overall player in the NBA for awhile. The reason that he is the go-to-guy is because he is the best scorer in the league. Kobe is clutch and there is no debating that. Also, there is no debating if Kobe is a better Laker than Shaq was. Kobe is without a doubt better and he just won a championship without Shaq. Kobe achieving the record is a major deal and no one should care if the Lakers lost because they are obviously the best team in the NBA.
